How to use an Oral-B iO: technique, pressure and timing

Learn how to guide an Oral-B iO tooth by tooth, use its pressure sensor and divide brushing time. Practical technique advice from dental hygienist Claudia.

White electric toothbrush with a round head on a charging base

To use an Oral-B iO, guide the round head gently from tooth to tooth rather than scrubbing hard. Give the outside, inside and chewing surfaces attention. The pressure sensor and timer help you keep track of pressure and brushing time.

This guide explains how to use those aids in your daily routine. The toothbrush still needs your guidance, and cleaning between your teeth remains a separate part of oral care.

What does the Oral-B iO help you with?

The Oral-B iO combines a round brush head with an oscillating-rotating movement. This removes plaque in a very targeted way. And you can feel the difference!

The round head, pressure feedback and timer are aids to careful brushing. They do not replace attention to each tooth or a technique that suits your mouth.

How to guide the round Oral-B iO head

Place the head gently against a tooth and guide it over the outside, inside and chewing surfaces before moving to the next tooth. Let the powered head work; you do not need to scrub firmly back and forth.

Using the pressure sensor without pressing harder

The smart pressure sensor tells you when you are pressing too hard. Brushing harder really does not make your teeth cleaner. Your gums are not particularly pleased about it either.

Sharing two minutes across your mouth

The timer helps you brush for long enough. And yes… two minutes can feel quite long when you are standing there waiting. Put on your favourite song in the meantime. 😉

Is an electric toothbrush always better?

Not necessarily. You can also brush extremely well with a manual toothbrush. Technique is ultimately the most important thing.

But if you often miss areas, brush too hard or find it difficult to reach everywhere with equal care, an electric toothbrush can be a very helpful aid.

And no, the Oral-B iO does not do absolutely everything for you. 😜

You still need to clean between your teeth yourself.
